Today I heard a great message at church about Chameleon Christians and I thought the same principles apply to how we conduct ourselves as leaders.
The key message was that often people change their view of the business opportunity they are involved in based on their circumstances and how they feel.
When everything is going well their belief and commitment to the business is good. When it is not going well their belief and commitment is bad.
The reality is our journey in life and in business is always going to be full of differing circumstances however people want to follow leaders who are solid.
Just like a high rise building digs down to bedrock to lay a foundation we must establish what our core values and beliefs are commit to these no matter what the “weather” is in our lives. Storms come and go in nature and in life but they never last forever and each one soon becomes a distant part of our past.
Chameleon leaders tend to change their behavior depending on who is around them. They give a perception they are living a life based on core values but when there is no one around they often lose sight of those values. It is vital that we demonstrate integrity which is about being consistent in our daily life.
It is often said that business is a ‘dog eat dog’ environment which is often used as an excuse to justify bad or unethical behavior in order to be successful. The reality is we should act with the same consistency and integrity in our personal life as well as business life because sooner or later the inconsistency will be visible to all.
They key is to be a thermostat and not a thermometer!
Set the temperature in your life and business rather than measuring the temperature around you and changing your behavior based on that temperature.
